Optics
*activities available as photocopies

This unit is set up a little differently than the others. I have included online lessons and virtual labs for this unit. These virtual labs are great, but are no substitute for the real thing. You are expected to do several similar labs using real mirrors and lenses in the classroom. The lab manuals for "Conceptual Physics", "Modern Physics" and other texts have many good labs on reflection, refraction and optics. The guide to the "Optics Discovery Classroom Kit" has some activities to get you started also. You may also wish to design your own labs based upon these labs or the virtual ones whose links follow.

ACTIVITIES ON Reflection & Mirrors

Law of Reflection Tutorial
Print out the worksheet for this online tutorial.
Try This
Set up a box like the one pictured. What do you see looking down from the top, before and after you clap chalk dust in the box? Why is outer space black even though it has so many stars?
Law of Reflection Lab
Print out this worksheet* and follow the link at the top for this virtual lab exercise.
Images in a Plane Mirror

*Mirrors and Images
Virtual lab on multiple images.
Curved Mirrors
Print out this worksheet and do the interactive tutorial on curved mirrors.
Image Formation: Ray Tracing Basics
FYI - use these rules with both mirrors and lenses.
